I know it is often easy to question American idealism – as we as a nation are still striving to live into the ideals spelled out by our founding Fathers. Much has come out of that idea, and much of it was, and still is, very messy.
But at the very core of each of us – not just in the U.S., but throughout the world – is the underlying belief that we are created as an autonomous being with certain inalienable rights. That belief is in our DNA.
In knowing that, I wanted to join with you in choosing to go beyond all the diversity, all the division and all the different opinions – and just bring an energy of appreciation for everyone who has stood up for the inalienable rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. And to share a renewed appreciation of the autonomy, the dignity, and the value that is in every person we encounter.
On this Independence Day, I want to also honor and revere those who have given their life in sacrifice to the ideal that America is…All those who, each day, put their lives on the line for the protection of the freedom that we hold dear.
My prayer is that as we take the big ideas of our founding fathers and bring it down to our own personal lives, we will begin to see a shift. And when that shift occurs in us, we will start to see it occur in the world.
Happy Independence Day!
